Travel Information

Participants are encouraged to arrive in Colombo at least one day in advance of the beginning of their course.

Each participant must make his/her own travel arrangements to Sri Lanka. As the visa process may be lengthy, you are encouraged to make your plans as soon as possible.


As of January 1st 2012, any traveler to Sri Lanka, on holiday or business or otherwise, needs to apply for an electronic travel authorization (ETA), prior to their arrival in the country.

Time Zone: Sri Lanka standard time is five and half hours ahead of GMT.
International Dialing: +94

Currency & exchange rate:  Sri Lanka Rupee Notes are in denominations of Rs. 5000, 2000, 1000, 500,100, 50, 20 and 10.

Exchange rate would be: 1US$ = Sri Lankan Rupees 113.00 approx.

Foreign currency could be exchanged at authorized exchanges, Banks, and hotels and also at the airport.

Banking Hours: Banks are open from 0900 hrs to 1300 hours Monday to Friday. Some city banks close at 1500 hrs, while some even have night banking facilities and are open on Saturday mornings. It is easy to withdraw money across the island at ATMs using international credit cards or debit cards.

Credit/Debit cards and ATMS: Master cards and Visa are widely accepted.  Most hotels, restaurants and shopping centres accept credit cards. American Express is also often accepted.
