Workshop on poverty and social impact analysis in Sub-Saharan Africa

The objectives of this pilot workshop are to: (i) test a set of training materials using a new software; (ii) enhance the skills of researchers and officials to conduct poverty and social impact assessments using quantitative data and state-of-the-art methods; (iii) begin to generate specific country analyses that deal with pressing policy concerns; (vi) support the building of country teams that can collaborate and strengthen national networks for welfare analysis beyond the duration of the workshop; (v) and share experiences between African countries that have made important advancements in the area of poverty analysis.

 

Material and references

 

The workshop will make use of DASP (Distributive Analysis for Stata Package) to illustrate and apply the measurement and policy tools that will be presented. This is available at: http://dasp.ecn.ulaval.ca/

The workshop will serve to test a number of training modules that will be made available to participants at the workshop and later shared on an online platform.

  • Inequality and equity
  • Poverty indices and poverty lines (including how to adjust for spatial and temporal differences in prices and poverty baskets)

  • Pro-poor analysis
  • Impact analysis of fiscal and macro shocks
  • Targeting and benefit incidence
  • Measurement of multidimensional poverty
  • Welfare dynamics and use of panel data
